Captain Ray’s Boating Adventures

A new website—and a better way to handle some of the work behind it.

01

WHY THEY CAME TO US

Captain Ray’s Boating Adventures needed a website.

Ray was already taking customers out on the water, with several boats offering different kinds of experiences in Galveston and East Texas. He wanted a place where people could see what he offered, learn about the boats and trips, and contact him.

His original thought was a simple, inexpensive website.

And sometimes that’s exactly what a new business needs.

02

WHAT WE LEARNED

It took a conversation. Or three.

Once we started talking, we learned there was quite a bit more behind Captain Ray’s than could be seen from the outside.

Different boats were suited to different locations, activities and numbers of passengers. Trips could vary in length and price. Customers needed enough information to understand their options and choose an experience that suited them.

Ray was also operating Captain Ray’s alongside AAA Landscaping, an established business he had run for years.

Both businesses depended on Ray’s time and availability. The charter business also brought its own scheduling, customer information, payments and pre-trip coordination.

Everything was working. But there were pieces of that routine work that didn’t necessarily need to depend on Ray.

03

WHAT WE SAW

We started looking at the website differently.

It still needed to introduce Captain Ray’s, explain the experiences and help people feel comfortable booking a trip.

But it could also do some work.

It could help customers sort through their options before contacting Ray. It could collect the information he needed. It could help manage booking and payment. And it could coordinate availability so that two businesses weren’t competing for the same hours on Ray’s calendar.

The website could become part of how the business works—not just how the business is advertised.

04

WHAT MADE SENSE

More wasn’t the goal. The right amount was.

A very small startup testing an idea might be perfectly well served by a simple website they build themselves.

Captain Ray’s needed something more substantial because the business already was.

The goal wasn’t to add technology everywhere we could. It was to identify the places where technology could take care of routine work, make things easier for customers and reduce the amount of coordination Ray had to handle himself.

Some things still belong with Ray. Technology doesn’t need to captain the boat.

But it can handle some of the office work while he does.

05

WHAT WE BUILT

We built a website around the way Captain Ray’s actually operates.

The content and structure help customers understand the boats, locations, activities and charter options available to them. Booking tools collect the information needed for a trip. Scheduling works with Ray’s availability across his businesses. Payment tools handle deposits and other routine steps.

Instead of treating the website, scheduling, payments and customer communication as separate pieces, we designed them to work together.

Each piece has a job.

06

WHAT CHANGED

Captain Ray’s now has more than a place for customers to find the business online.

Customers can learn, compare options and take meaningful steps toward a charter without requiring Ray to personally handle every part of the process.

Routine technology handles more of the routine work.

That leaves Ray with more time for the parts that actually need Captain Ray.
